Old gamers can tell you stories of countless video games they used to play back in the game, on all sorts of platforms. Finding one of these consoles in a good working condition, and some games for them, can prove to be quite difficult. However, if you really want to play old school games, you can get an emulator and play them on your computer. This is what RetroArch can help you with. The software provides support for all classic consoles including the Atari 2600, NES and SNES, Sega Genesis and many others.

The software is offered free of charge, for a wide range of platforms. Besides Windows, Mac and Linux, you can also use it on Android and iOS devices and even on the Raspberry Pi. Installing the software doesn't take more than a minute and it doesn't involve any complicated settings. Also, you don't have to sacrifice too many resources or meet any special requirements.

It takes a minute or two to get used to the user interface, mainly because it is operated with the keyboard and it can be confusing if you try to control it with the mouse. The software places a wide range of options in front of you, but they are all organized in different menus and sub-menus. You only need to remember that you can navigate with the arrow keys, select something with the Enter key and go back with Backspace.

As previously mentioned, RetroArch supports a huge number of classic gaming platforms, but it can't run any ROMs straight off the bat. You will need to load the necessary cores first. Fortunately, finding and downloading a core is quite easy. You can browse through a long list of cores and when you find the one you need, you only need to select it and the software will take care of the rest. Just don't forget to actually load the core, once it is downloaded and installed.

If you have ROMs of classic video games, you can browse through your local folders and load them on the same interface. Once you load a ROM, the software will play it right away.

There are a few advantages RetroArch has to offer, which we didn't have back in the days when we played on our old consoles. For example, you can save and load the current state of a ROM. In other words, you can save your game progress, so no more staring all over again when you run out of lifes. Furthermore, the software lets you take snapshots or record your gameplay, so you can show your friends images from an old school game and make them take a trip down on Nostalgia Lane.

Any classic console you can imagine can be emulated without any problems when using RetroArch.

Pros

The software supports a huge amount of classic consoles. You can find all the necessary cores and install them on the fly. The software lets you save ROM states, take screenshots, record and much more.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention.
